Easy Basil Margarita Recipe with Lime and Tequila Blanco

This Basil Margarita is a simple herbaceous cocktail perfect for summer. All you need are a few simple ingredients for this easy cocktail recipe. This cocktail can also be used as the base for strawberry margaritas with basil or even a cucumber basil margarita! If you’re a fan of basil, you will love this simple recipe – it’s a great way to use up leftover fresh basil leaves sitting in your fridge!

What I love about this margarita is its subtly sweet and a little herby. It’s very light, and you get a hint of basil – which is my favorite herb! Homemade margaritas are always great for a party (Cinco de Mayo, a cookout, etc.), and this recipe is no exception! You can add some strawberry juice or even muddled blueberries for a blueberry basil margarita – yum! The possibilities are endless with this great margarita recipe. If you’re a fan of this margarita, check out my other cocktail recipes.

Ingredients

Ingredients for a basil margarita on a marble board.

  • Tequila blanco – Tequila is the main ingredient in this delicious drink! Opt for a high-quality blanco for a smoother sip. Don’t shy away from exploring different brands until you find your perfect match.
  • Simple syrup – Adjust sweetness to your liking. Start with less, taste, and add more if needed. It’s easier to add than to take away!
  • Fresh lime juice – Squeeze those limes fresh – no shortcuts. The difference in flavor is worth the extra effort. Pro tip: Roll the limes on the counter before juicing to get the most juice out of them.
  • Fresh basil leaves – Muddle the basil gently to release its aroma. Don’t overdo it; we want a hint, not a basil overload.
  • Ice – Use larger ice cubes to keep your drink cold without diluting it too quickly. The last sip should be as good as the first.

Substitutions

  • Your favorite tequila – I love blanco tequila (silver tequila) for this recipe, but as long as you use high quality tequila, this drink will be awesome! I’ve made this with reposado tequila and it’s also delicious!
  • Add orange liqueur – For more depth, you could add some orange liqueur or Cointreau, which is a type of triple sec.
  • Cucumber basil margarita – Muddle fresh cucumber slices for a cool and refreshing twist. English cucumbers are crisp and mild, perfect for balancing the basil.
  • Strawberry basil margarita – Swap out simple syrup for strawberry puree for a fruity burst. Fresh strawberries work best; muddle them for an extra kick.
  • Garnishes – Like a classic margarita, you can also add a lime wedge for garnish or grab some kosher salt to rim the glass! Other garnish ideas include adding lime zest to the salt rim or a sprig of fresh basil.
  • Basil-infused tequila – For a stronger flavor, infuse your tequila with basil leaves before making the drink. That way you’ll have a more vibrant flavor and punch!

Tips and Notes

  • Basil intensity – Adjust the basil leaves based on your preference for herbal notes. If you’re a basil enthusiast, add an extra leaf for a more pronounced aroma.
  • Chill factor – For extra chill, ensure your cocktail shaker and glass are well-iced before starting. A frosty cold Basil Margarita enhances the overall drinking experience.

Recipe FAQs

Absolutely! While sweet basil is commonly used, you can experiment with different varieties like Thai basil for a unique twist.

Muddling basil releases its aromatic oils, enhancing the flavor. However, if you prefer a lighter basil essence, you can skip this step and simply shake the leaves.

Replace the Tequila Blanco with a non-alcoholic tequila substitute or even coconut water for a refreshing mocktail.

Serving Suggestions

  • Pitcher drinks – Simplify serving at larger gatherings by preparing a batch of Basil Margaritas in advance. Mix the ingredients in a large pitcher and refrigerate until needed. Serve over ice, and your guests can enjoy the refreshing coastal vibes without missing a beat. Don’t forget fresh herbs so guests can add their own sprig of basil to this iconic cocktail!
  • Fajita night – Spice up your fajita night with Basil Margaritas. The herbal notes complement the bold flavors of fajitas for a perfect balance. Set up a fajita bar with various toppings and let the flavor festivities begin.
  • Seafood pairing – These margaritas are perfect with seafood! Pair them with light seafood appetizers like shrimp ceviche or fish tacos for a perfect coastal vibe.
